347,609 visits in 3 days. It looks like a huge success. In reality, it’s a disaster.
That’s what the analytics showed for a site I’m tracking in Webful. Over that same period, the site had received about 400 real visitors. The rest? Bots.
What exactly is spam traffic?
Automated visits generated by machines. Bots, scrapers, monitoring tools. They arrive on your site, view a page, and leave immediately. They don’t buy anything, don’t read anything, and never convert.
And yet, they show up in your stats as real visits.
How can you spot them? The signs are quite distinctive: a sudden, unexplained spike; one-second sessions; never two pages visited in a row; and traffic that remains constant day and night at the same rate. A human would never do that.
The real problem isn’t the inflated numbers
That’s what we tend to think at first. But the real problem is the decisions we make based on those numbers.
You think your campaign was a huge success. No. You think your landing page is attracting visitors. Not that either. You think your traffic has doubled. Not even close.
That’s exactly what happened on this site. Had the client not detected this, they would have optimized their product based on data that didn’t reflect their actual audience. They would have made the wrong decisions, for the wrong reasons, based on a signal that didn’t exist.
What Webful Does to Address This
Two levels of response have been built directly into the tool.
First, a “Spam Traffic” section that automatically detects these spikes and filters them out of your statistics. You can see details about the filtered visits, the IP addresses involved, and the most frequently targeted pages.
Next, in the Diagnostics section—under the Health tab—if your site has been affected, Webful clearly explains what happened, why, and offers concrete advice on how to protect yourself in the future: set up a bot shield, secure exposed forms, etc.
Not just a number. An explanation and an action plan.
Because clean data is the foundation of all your product decisions. So ask yourself this question regularly: Is the traffic I see in my analytics really my audience?
