One button, two numbers. And the gap between them changes everything.
That's what I discovered when I enabled the "My Goals" feature on Webful. A few hours after setting it up on the “View Demo” button on my site, the first numbers came in: 13 clicks, but only 6 unique visitors.
In other words, some visitors click the same button multiple times. This information is completely hidden if you only look at page views.
How it works
In Webful, any button, link, or element can be tracked as a goal. Just add an attribute to the element, and every click is automatically tracked, without any complicated setup.
For each goal, two metrics are displayed: the number of triggers and the number of unique visits that triggered that goal.
What the discrepancy reveals
When the two numbers are close, it’s no surprise: each visitor clicks once, as expected.
But when the number of clicks far exceeds the number of visitors, it means that the same visitor is returning to click on the same element multiple times. This is exactly what’s happening with my demo button in the sticky bar.
There are two possible explanations: either the user hesitates and clicks several times before making a decision, or there is a technical or UX issue— the click doesn’t trigger the expected action, so they try again.
Beyond simply counting clicks
"My Goals" opens up several other uses: comparing the same button based on its position on the page (menu, hero section, footer) to see which one converts best, tracking a video view as a goal in the same way as a click, or comparing multiple CTAs to identify the one that truly drives action.
The next time you look at the number of clicks on a button, also check how many unique visitors that number represents. The difference between the two often tells a bigger story than the raw number—and this is a metric that Google Analytics doesn’t provide natively.
